How Much Seed Do I Need?
Before you order your grass seed, you need to measure the area that you are planting. Each seed mixture requires different amounts to be sown, which will typically be described as 20 – 50g/m2. This means that if you have a 10m2 space, you will need to purchase 2 – 5kg of grass seed. We supply seeds in several bag weights and our team are happy to help any queries about quantity.
What Do I Do Before Planting?
Before you begin planting your seeds, you will need to prepare the soil by loosening it using either hand tools or machinery depending on the size and type of your area. Look out for anything that may inhibit the growth of your seeds, such as weeds and rocks, and make sure they are removed.
If you know the pH level of your soil, you can improve it by adding lime to increase the rate at which the seeds germinate. It is also important to let your soil rest for a few days before you start planting. Once you are ready to sow, have a final check for debris and make sure the soil has been levelled.
What is the Best Way to Plant Seeds?
Once your soil has been prepared, it’s time to start planting your seeds. You can easily do this by simply sprinkling the seeds with your hand or by using specialist equipment such as a seed drill, making sure not to spread too many seeds too close together as this can impede on their growth.
After you have distributed the seeds, you will need to roll them into the soil, which can be done with a roller, a rake, or a mechanical device. Rolling your seeds helps ensure they are embedded enough to grow, preventing them from being blown or washed away by the weather or eaten by birds.
What Maintenance Do Seeds Need?
After you plant your seeds, you will need to water and fertilise them properly to ensure steady and effective growth. The amount of watering and the type of fertiliser needed will depend on your seeds, your soil type and the climate – our team can offer suggestions based on your requirements.
For most seed varieties, we would advise watering the soil consistently for about a month. You want the soil to always be sufficiently moist for growth, so never allow it to dry out. Another top tip is to wait a month before you use fertiliser, so that the seeds have time to germinate and begin growing.
