Make the Cut with a Well-Maintained Garden Lawn Mower
Now that No Mow May is over, it is time to resume looking after your green spaces and gardens with some careful cutting.
A well-maintained garden lawn mower is the secret to a pristine-looking lawn and if it was locked in the garage during May, this is an ideal time for doing checks and maintenance.
You can still support the campaign to encourage wild flowers and help pollinators just by cutting different sections of the lawn at different times or by leaving areas untouched.
Top Tips for Cutting
Here are our top tips for keeping your garden mower fit for purpose so that grass is cut cleanly and precisely, helping to reduce the risk of disease and improving its appearance.
1. Clean Regularly
Regular cleaning: Clean your lawn mower after each use to remove grass clippings, debris, and dirt, paying particular attention to the blades, undercarriage, and air vents.
2. Sharpen the Blades
Dull blades can tear grass instead of cleanly cutting it so inspect the mower blades regularly and sharpen them as needed. Always follow the manufacturer’s instructions or think about getting in some specialist help if you are not confident you can do the job yourself.
3. Adjust Cutting Height
Set the cutting height of your mower according to the recommended level for your grass type as different grasses have specific height preferences. Cutting too low can stress the grass, while cutting too high may result in an uneven appearance.
4. Maintain Blade Balance
Ensure the blades are balanced properly as an unbalanced blade can cause vibrations and uneven cutting.
5. Check and Replace Worn Parts
Regularly inspect the mower’s components, including belts, filters, spark plugs, and oil levels and replace any worn-out or damaged parts following the manufacturer’s recommendations.
6. Lubrication
It is essential to keep the moving parts of your mower lubricated in order to keep it running smoothly. Refer to your owner’s manual for locating the lubrication points and when to do it.
And finally…
7. Store Properly
When not in use, store your mower in a clean and dry area that will protect it from the elements. You might event consider covering it to prevent the build-up of dust or moisture.
